Of good cheer

I recently gave a talk about organizing and shared some statistics from the “State of Organizing” report by MaxSold:

👉 62% of people report that organizing is not fun.

👉 However, 90% reported they were more efficient once organized; 90% reported feeling a sense of accomplishment after organizing; and 87% said they could focus better once organized.

👉 Organization/clutter affect mood for better and for worse, with respondents reporting feeling happy and calm when organized, and unhappy and tense when disorganized. Respondents who identified as organized are more emotionally and psychologically impacted by clutter and organization than those who identify as disorganized.

That first bullet really gave me pause. To me, there is hardly anything that is more fun than organizing! But I wanted to wrap my mind around the way those 62 percenters feel, so I thought about something that is absolutely unfun to me – getting up in the morning.

The bed is suddenly extra cozy. The comforter hugs me gently. The temperature is ideal. But then there is a rude alarm, lights being turned on, rustling noises down the hall. I sigh and say out loud, “I love sleeping!” This happens almost every morning. It would be a terribly negative way to start the day if it weren’t for one special guest.

Our dog, Friday.

Lights on and morning getting-up noises are his cue to walk click-click-click into the bedroom and poke me in the face with his big nose. Tail a-wagging, he puts just his front paws on me (because he’s not allowed in the bed) and smiles. Yes, smiles! He loves morning! He’s ready to get things started! He cannot wait to begin! He is an exclamation point in canine form!

And that, my dear 62 percenters, is what a professional organizer can do for you. You are facing a task you are not thrilled about, but we are eager to walk beside you with excitement and pep! We will bring unflagging enthusiasm, smiles (yes, smiles!), fresh ideas and a game plan to get your project done. Then you will reap the many benefits: a sense of accomplishment, being more efficient, feeling happier and calmer.

And just to be clear, there will be no poke in the face. 😉
